City Manager-Commission

The City of Lakeland has a City Manger-Commission form of government. The City Manager is the administrative head of the City and works under the direction and supervision of the Board of Commissioners.

The five-member Board of Commissioners (BOC), one of whom is elected as Mayor, are elected at-large. The commissioners' duties are to set city policy through legislation and to supervise and evaluate the management of the city provided by the City Manager.

The mayor shall preside at all meetings of the board of commissioners and perform such other duties consistent with his office, and he shall have a seat, a voice, and a vote, but no veto. He shall sign the journal of the board and all ordinances on their final passage, execute all deeds, bonds and contracts made in the name of the city, and he may introduce ordinances in the board of commissioners.

This structure is defined in the Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) Title 6.

Citizen Involvement

In order for Lakeland to continue to develop as a city with a reputation for sensible government, our citizens need to continue to stay informed and involved in city business. Although important, it's not enough to just get involved at election time. And it's not enough to just read news accounts, which may have selective content or bias.

Our elected officials work very hard on our behalf. Attending the monthly meetings is an important aspect of becoming a well-informed citizen in our community. Each meeting provides an opportunity for public input, which is your opportunity to speak on issues of concern to you. Please refer to the schedule below (subject to change) for meetings of special interest to you.
